About Me

Born and raised in Atlanta, I am a recent graduate of Stanford University in California, where I majored in Biology, minored in Art Practice, and completed a Notation in Science Communication for my degree capstone. I am now pursuing a Ph.D. for a career in zoology, while continuing to cultivate an artistic practice.

In college, I brought my creative eye to science communication, finding web design to be a versatile medium for expressing nuanced concepts in an accessible way. I worked for the Stanford Department of Comparative Medicine to build two online resources for animal well-being, Beyond3Rs and the Mouse Ethogram.

In 2021, I graduated from Midtown High School in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout high school, I took various arts courses, including AP Studio Art in both 11th and 12th grade. During this time, my interest in guitar and songwriting also blossomed.

Art is the piece of my life that has held this all together. Over the years, I’ve found a variety of mediums and modes that I enjoy, and I plan to continue experimenting heavily in the future as I find new ways of creating that resonate with me. I’ve often returned to inspiration from the visual languages of counterculture movements, art nouveau, poster design, mosaics, and of course, intricate biological structures. As my artistic identity expands and evolves, I hope you will stick with me on my journey by following me on Instagram (@joannabakerart) and sharing my work with others.
